Part of St. Edmund's
Catholic School

Here are some frequently-asked questions and answers about ScienceVT

  • So just what is ScienceVT?

ScienceVT is group of enthusiastic people who want to dedicate their time to furthering their understanding of Science.  ScienceVT currently has over 25 members, aged from 12-15, who all attend St. Edmund's Catholic School in Dover.

St. Edmund's has a system of vertical tutor groups.  Near the end of Year 7, pupils have an opportunity to choose which vertical tutor group they will join and stay with for Years 8, 9 and 10.  There are many tutor groups covering most subject areas of the school.  Due to the size of each group vs. the number of applicants, not every pupil gets their first choice, so there is a lot of competition to join popular groups.  Some pupils enter vertical tutor groups that do not (at least at first) have a specific theme.

ScienceVT is now into its second year.  A summary of all our Projects so far can be found on this site.

If you have been here before and are looking for a particular page, you may find the site map useful.

  • Who runs ScienceVT?

During the first year, one teacher from St. Edmund's Catholic School ran ScienceVT.  Now into its second year there are two teachers responsible for the group.  If you use the contact form  you will be emailing the teachers that run the group, not the pupils directly.

"ScienceVT" is a contraction of our proper title as the Science Vertical Tutor Group.

Due to a reorganisation of the house system, from September 2005 we will also be part of Anne Frank house, one of six houses at the school.  We are tutor group F1.

  • I am at another school.  Can I get involved with ScienceVT?

As ScienceVT is now in its second year, it would be fantastic to begin to join up with similar Science-related groups or clubs at other schools across the county, the country or the world.  There are a number of projects we would like to try out that need co-operation with other schools.

If you are a teacher involved with a Science tutor group or a Science Club at another school, please visit the ScienceVT@Large section and get in touch.

If you are a pupil from another school, please speak to your science teacher and ask them to visit our website, especially the ScienceVT@Large section.

  • Can anyone else get involved?

We are always keen to hear about ideas for ScienceVT, or about any events or competitions in which we could be involved.  Email in using the address webmaster at sciencevt.co.uk

  • Daily reflections

As part of a Catholic Community, the members of ScienceVT appreciate an opportunity for reflection each day.  Themes for these are frequently set by the school but we also explore our own themes when appropriate.

  • What are the aims of ScienceVT?

The members of ScienceVT have decided that they want to...

  • Gain a better understanding of science through practical work

  • Try to help people through science

  • Organise and run a Science Fair

  • Improve coursework grades

  • Further their general scientific knowledge

  • Complete individual research projects
